This year we celebrate the World Intellectual Property (IP) Day with the theme “Innovate for a Green Future,” to highlight the importance of IP in supporting innovation and creativity that help create a green future. IP plays a vital role in incentivizing innovative people to develop eco-friendly products and new technologies supporting environmental sustainability. 

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the contribution of the IP system that has incentivized scientists and innovators around the globe to develop new technologies that are needed during this critical time. Potential vaccines and testing kits are being developed quickly by using researches and diagnostic measures based on what has been done for other diseases. Treatments using patented and off-patent medicines are currently underway to determine their effectiveness on COVID-19. In addition, other patented technologies such as various devices and mobile applications, and copyrighted software are being used to track and analyze the outbreak situation. These are only examples of how people benefit from a robust IP system.

IP is at the heart of many efforts in caring for our planet, our home, and our people.
